Frequently asked questions.

What is the difference between Acupuncture and Dry Needling?

While both modalities use the exact same ultra-thin, sterile, solid filament needles, their clinical approach and history differ:

  • Acupuncture is a comprehensive medical system used for thousands of years. It balances the body’s nervous system, reduces systemic inflammation, regulates hormones, and treats internal issues (like anxiety, digestive upset, or sleep disorders) by accessing specific meridian points.

  • Dry Needling (often called trigger point acupuncture) focuses purely on the musculoskeletal system. It targets specific, tight knots of muscle—known as trigger points—to break up muscle tension, relieve localized sports injuries, and rapidly improve range of motion.

Does it hurt? What does it feel like?

Acupuncture needles are incredibly fine—roughly the width of a single strand of hair. (In fact, about 40 acupuncture needles can fit inside a single hollow needle used for a standard blood draw!)

  • During insertion: Most patients feel only a tiny, fleeting pinch, or absolutely nothing at all.

  • Once in place: You may experience a deep, dull, achy, or heavy sensation. This is a normal, healthy neurological response indicating that the nervous system is actively responding to the point.

  • Dry needling specific: When a needle hits a tight muscle knot, you may feel a brief, sudden "muscle twitch." While it can be surprising, it is usually followed by an immediate sense of release and relaxation.

How does Electrostimulation (Electro-acupuncture) work?

During electrostimulation, we attach small alligator clips to the top of the acupuncture needles and run a gentle, pulsing micro-current through them. By adjusting the frequency (hertz) to match your specific condition, we can rhythmically signal your deep tissues to push out inflammation, flood the area with fresh blood flow, and stimulate the release of your body's natural pain-relieving endorphins. It feels like a soothing, rhythmic tapping or vibrating sensation.

What is Shockwave Therapy, and how does it work?

Shockwave therapy is a completely non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-energy acoustic pulses (sound waves) to treat chronic pain—no needles required! Using a handheld device placed over the skin, we direct sound waves deep into stubborn or poorly vascularized tissues (like old scar tissue, worn tendons, or stiff ligaments).

These waves do three powerful things:

  1. Jumpstart Healing: They trigger a controlled, localized micro-inflammatory response that commands your body to restart the natural healing process in chronic, stagnant injuries.

  2. Improve Blood Supply: They stimulate angiogenesis (the creation of new blood vessels), bringing critical nutrients to tissues that normally heal very slowly.

  3. Rebuild Tissue: They promote the production of collagen, which is the foundational building block needed to repair damaged tendons and ligaments.

Is Shockwave Therapy painful?

Because it delivers high-energy pulses to an already injured or sensitive area, you will feel some deep, localized discomfort during the treatment—often described as a deep, intense thumping or a "hurts-so-good" pressure. The treatment is fast (typically only 5 to 10 minutes per area), and your practitioner will always communicate with you to keep the intensity within your personal tolerance level.

What conditions respond best to Shockwave Therapy?

It is highly recommended for stubborn, chronic musculoskeletal conditions that haven’t responded well to standard physical therapy or medications. It is incredibly effective for:

  • Heel pain and Plantar Fasciitis

  • Achilles tendonitis

  • Tennis elbow or Golfer’s elbow

  • Chronic shoulder pain or rotator cuff issues

  • Knee pain and patellar tendonitis

What does Cupping do, and how does it work?

While treatments like massage or foam rolling apply positive pressure (pushing down on tissue), cupping uses negative pressure (suction) to pull tissue upward. We place sterile cups on the skin to create a gentle vacuum. This decompresses the tight layers of muscle and fascia (the connective tissue wrapping your muscles), allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to rush into the area, flushing out metabolic waste and relieving deep-seated tension.

Will Cupping leave those round marks, and are they bruises?

Yes, those iconic circular marks—famously seen on Olympic athletes—are a very common and normal part of the process. However, they are not true bruises. True bruises are caused by blunt-force trauma that crushes tissue. Cupping marks are caused by the vacuum gently drawing old, stagnant blood and cellular waste out of tight muscles up to the surface layer of the skin, where your lymphatic system can easily clear it away.

How long do the marks last?

They are completely temporary and usually fade within 3 to 7 days. The first time you receive cupping, the marks are often the darkest and take the longest to fade. With subsequent sessions, as your tissues become healthier and blood flow improves, the marks typically become much lighter and disappear faster.

⚠️ Pro Tip from the QCA&W Team: If you have an upcoming special event where your skin will be exposed (like a wedding, vacation, or photoshoot), please let your practitioner know at the start of your session so we can adjust your treatment timeline or use lighter suction!

How many treatments will I need to see results?

"Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is optimal wellness." Because every body and injury is unique, we formulate a personalized treatment plan during your initial consultation at Queen City Acupuncture.

  • Acute issues: (e.g., a recently strained muscle or sudden spasm) often respond quickly, sometimes within 2 to 4 sessions.

  • Chronic conditions: (e.g., years of stubborn back pain, complex digestive issues, or systemic anxiety) typically require a series of 6 to 10 consistent sessions. Most of our patients begin noticing a distinct, lasting shift in their baseline symptoms between the 4th and 6th visit.

How should I prepare for my appointment?

To get the absolute most out of your treatment session, please follow these simple steps:

  • 🍽️ Don't arrive hungry: Eat a light meal or snack an hour or two before your session so your body has stable blood sugar.

  • 👚 Wear loose, comfortable clothing: Loose pants that can easily roll above the knee and loose-fitting shirts make it simple for us to access primary treatment points without requiring you to fully disrobe.

  • Limit caffeine: Try to avoid heavy caffeine or stimulants right before your session so your nervous system can settle into a deeply relaxed, restorative state.

What should I do (or avoid) after my treatment?

Acupuncture and modern tissue therapies kickstart an active cellular healing response that keeps working long after you leave our clinic doors. To support your recovery:

  • 💧 Stay well-hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help flush out released metabolic waste.

  • 🏋️ Take it easy: Avoid intense, heavy workouts or strenuous physical labor for the rest of the day. Gentle movement, casual walks, or light stretching is perfectly fine.

  • 🚿 Hold off on extreme heat: Avoid freezing cold showers, ice baths, or hot tubs immediately after your session to let your circulation settle naturally.

Do you reuse needles?

NO! We only use FDA approved, single use, acupuncture needles that are properly disposed of after each treatment. Our acupuncturist, Garrett Krause, spent time teaching the CNT course to Acupuncture students prior to their Graduation. CNT stands for Clean Needle Technique, a Nationally Certified course that all Acupuncturists must complete in order to obtain their License to practice.

Do you accept insurance?

Queen City Acupuncture & Wellness Center operates as an out-of-network provider and does not bill health insurance companies directly. However, if your insurance policy covers acupuncture services, we are happy to provide you with a detailed Superbill (which includes all necessary NPI numbers, diagnostic codes, and procedure codes) so you can submit it to your provider for direct reimbursement.

Additionally, acupuncture is a fully qualifying medical expense under Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), and we gladly accept these cards at our front desk at the time of service.
